Stump grinding machine grinding a tree stump

Sometimes grinding is not enough. You want to plant a new tree where the old one stood. You are building a patio, a shed, or an addition on that spot. Big surface roots keep pushing back up after grinding. When you need every trace of the old tree gone — stump and root ball, all of it — that is full stump removal. At Waldorf Tree Services Experts, we dig it out, pull it with the right equipment, and leave the ground clean and ready. Call or text (240) 213-4913 today for a free on-site written estimate.

What Is Stump Removal?

Stump removal takes out the entire stump plus the root ball. We dig a trench around the stump. We cut the roots with saws. Then we lift and pull the whole mass out with an excavator or mini skid steer. The root ball is hauled away. The hole is filled with clean soil, compacted, and raked level.

This is a bigger job than grinding, and it leaves a clean slate. No stump. No roots. Nothing left to rot, sprout, or get in the way of your plans.

Stump removal is not the same as stump grinding. Grinding chews the stump 6 to 12 inches below ground level and leaves the roots to rot in place. Removal pulls out the whole stump and root ball. Choose removal when you want to replant in that spot, build on it, or be rid of the roots for good.

When You Need It

If one of these is your plan, call (240) 213-4913. We will look at the stump, check what is near it — pipes, walkways, fences — and give you the safest plan in writing.

How It Works

  1. Free on-site visit. We check the stump size, the root spread, and everything near it — pipes, walkways, fences, septic lines. We call 811 to have underground utilities marked when the stump sits near them.
  2. You get a written price. The price covers the digging, the pulling, the hauling, and the backfill. Everything in writing before we start.
  3. We dig around the stump. We cut a trench around the root ball, wide enough to reach the main roots. Roots are cut with saws, not ripped — clean cuts protect nearby pipes and structures.
  4. We pull the stump and root ball. An excavator or mini skid steer lifts the whole mass out. We shake the loose soil back into the hole. The stump and root ball are loaded on the truck and hauled away.
  5. We fill the hole with clean soil. We backfill in layers and compact each layer, so the ground does not sink later. Then we rake it level.
  6. We walk it with you. The spot is clean, level, and ready — for grass seed, a new tree, or your building project.

What Affects the Cost?

Stump size and root spread. A small pine stump is a half-day job. A big oak spreads roots wide and deep. More roots mean more digging, more cutting, and a bigger hole to fill.

Tree species. Oaks and maples grow heavy, wide root balls. Pines are often shallower. The species tells us what to expect underground.

Access for equipment. The excavator has to reach the stump. A wide-open yard is fast. A stump behind a narrow gate or on a slope takes smaller equipment and more time.

Soil and rocks. Soft soil digs fast. Rocky or clay-heavy ground slows everything down. We check the site first and price it honestly.

Hauling and backfill. The root ball is hauled away, and clean soil is brought in to fill the hole. Both are part of your written price — no surprises.

Why Not Do It Yourself?

A full root ball is far heavier than it looks. Hundreds of pounds of wood and soil, locked in by roots. Digging one out by hand takes days of brutal work — and most homeowners quit halfway with a bigger mess than they started with.

Pulling it with a truck and chain is the dangerous shortcut. Chains snap under load. A snapped chain can whip back or send the stump flying. Trucks get damaged. And a stump dragged across the yard tears up everything in its path — lawn, fence, garden beds.

Then there is what you cannot see. Cutting roots blind can slice through water lines, gas lines, or septic pipes. Pros call 811 and cut roots with care near anything buried.

This is a machine job. Let the crew with the excavator handle it.

Common Stump Removal Mistakes

Thinking grinding and removal are the same. The mistake: paying for grinding, then trying to plant a new tree in ground full of old roots. Why it costs you: the new tree struggles, and you pay for the job twice. What to do instead: if you plan to replant or build in that spot, choose full removal from the start.

Skipping the 811 call. The mistake: digging around a stump without knowing what is buried there. Why it costs you: a cut gas or electric line is dangerous, and the repair bill is yours. What to do instead: call 811 before any digging — in Maryland it is free, and we do it on every job near utilities.

Not asking about backfill. The mistake: the quote covers pulling the stump but not filling the hole. Why it costs you: you are left with a crater and a load of dirt to buy and move. What to do instead: ask up front — does the price include clean backfill, compacted and raked level?

Leaving the hole open. The mistake: the stump comes out and the hole sits open for weeks. Why it costs you: rain turns it into a mud pit, the edges cave in, and someone could get hurt. What to do instead: have the crew backfill the same day. We fill, compact, and rake level before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump removal cost?

It costs more than grinding because it is a bigger job. The price depends on stump size and root spread. Call (240) 213-4913 for a free on-site written estimate.

Will it tear up my yard?

We keep the work area as small as we can. We fill and level the hole when we are done. The grass around it may need some reseeding.

Can you remove roots near my foundation?

We can, but we are careful. Cutting big roots close to a house can affect the soil. We will look first and tell you the safest plan.

What is the difference between grinding and removal?

Grinding chews the stump below ground and is fast. Removal digs out the whole stump and root ball. Removal is for replanting or building in that spot.

How long does stump removal take?

Most single stumps take half a day. Big oaks with wide root balls can take a full day. Your written estimate includes our time plan, so you know what to expect.

What do you do with the hole?

We fill it with clean soil, compacted in layers so the ground does not sink later. Then we rake it level. The spot is ready for grass seed, a new tree, or your building project.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Yes — that is one of the main reasons people choose removal. The old root ball is gone and the hole is filled with clean soil. We recommend fresh topsoil on top and will tell you what the new tree needs to thrive.

Do you check for underground utilities first?

Yes. We call 811 to have gas, electric, water, and cable lines marked whenever the stump sits near them. In Maryland the marking service is free. We never dig blind near buried lines.
