Stump grinding machine grinding a tree stump

The tree is gone, but the stump is still there. The mower slams into it. The kids trip over it. It sits in the middle of your lawn, rotting, drawing ants and termites. Grinding is the fastest way to make it disappear. At Waldorf Tree Services Experts, our stump grinder chews the stump down below ground level — most stumps are gone in under an hour. Call or text (240) 213-4913 today for a free on-site written estimate.

What Is Stump Grinding?

A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning cutting wheel. The wheel chews the stump into small wood chips, layer by layer. We grind 6 to 12 inches below the ground. The chips mix with the soil to fill the hole. You can plant grass or flowers right over the spot.

Grinding is fast. Most stumps take under an hour. The roots stay underground, where they rot away on their own. You get a flat, clean yard the same day.

Grinding and full stump removal are different jobs. Grinding chews the stump below ground level and is fast — right for most yards. Full stump removal digs out the entire stump and root ball. You only need that if you plan to replant a tree in the same spot or build there.

When You Need It

If one of these sounds like your yard, call (240) 213-4913. Most stumps are gone in under an hour, and you will never trip on it again.

How It Works

  1. Free on-site visit. We measure the stump at ground level and count any surface roots. We check access — the grinder needs a path to reach it. We also check for underground utilities nearby.
  2. You get a written price. One stump or five, the price is in writing before we start. More stumps in one visit cost less per stump.
  3. We position the grinder. The machine parks over the stump. We clear the area so flying chips do not hit windows, cars, or garden beds. Safety screens go up where needed.
  4. We grind the stump below ground level. The cutting wheel chews through the stump layer by layer, side to side, going deeper with each pass. We go 6 to 12 inches below the ground — deep enough that the mower never finds it.
  5. We rake the chips level. The chips mix with soil to fill the hole. Want them hauled away? We can do that. Want them as mulch for your beds? They are yours.
  6. The spot is ready to seed. We leave the area level and clean. You can plant grass or flowers over it right away.

What Affects the Cost?

Stump diameter. We measure the stump at ground level. A 12-inch stump is a quick job. A 36-inch oak stump takes much longer. Wider means more grinding time.

How many stumps. One stump has a minimum trip cost. Three or four stumps in one visit cost less per stump, because the crew and machine are already there.

Access. The grinder needs a path to the stump — a gate wide enough, no steep slopes it cannot climb, no soft ground it will sink into. Tight access means smaller equipment and more time.

Surface roots. Some trees — maples especially — throw roots far across the yard. If you want those ground down too, it adds time.

Rocks and soil. Rocky ground slows the wheel and wears the cutting teeth. We check the site first and price it honestly.

Why Not Do It Yourself?

Rental grinders are not lawn mowers. They are heavy, powerful machines. Hit a rock and the wheel can throw debris or jerk the machine hard. One moment of lost control can hurt you or smash a window.

Buried utilities are the hidden risk. Gas, electric, cable, and water lines run under yards. Hit one and the repair bill — or the danger — is real. In Maryland, you can call 811 and have lines marked for free before anyone digs or grinds.

Then there is the math. A rental costs money, plus the trailer to haul it, plus your whole Saturday, plus the learning curve. By the time you are done, a pro crew would have finished in an hour.

Small stumps far from the house with clear access? Some handy homeowners manage. Anything big, near a structure, or near utilities is a crew's job.

Common Stump Grinding Mistakes

Ignoring the stump. The mistake: leaving it because "it is not hurting anything." Why it costs you: rotting stumps draw termites and ants toward your home. Mower blades chip on them. Kids and guests trip. What to do instead: grind it once and be done. Most stumps take under an hour.

Burying it under dirt. The mistake: covering the stump with soil and hoping it rots away. Why it costs you: a buried stump takes years to rot, and the ground sinks as it decays — leaving a dip in your lawn. What to do instead: grind it below grade and fill the spot with the chips and soil. Flat from day one.

Hiring without asking about cleanup. The mistake: the quote covers grinding only. You come home to a volcano of wood chips. Why it costs you: you rake and haul for a weekend, or pay someone else to do it. What to do instead: ask up front what cleanup is included — hauling, raking level, or chips left as mulch.

Grinding too shallow. The mistake: a quick surface grind that leaves the stump just under the grass. Why it costs you: the stump can sprout again, and the mower still finds it. What to do instead: ask for 6 to 12 inches below ground level. That is the depth that actually ends it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?

It depends on the stump's width and how many you have. More stumps in one visit cost less per stump. Call (240) 213-4913 for a free on-site written estimate.

How deep do you grind?

About 6 to 12 inches below the ground. Deep enough to plant grass or flowers over it.

Will the stump grow back?

No. Grinding removes the part that could sprout. Small roots left behind will rot away.

Grinding or full removal — which do I need?

Grinding is fast and fine for most yards. Full stump removal digs out the whole root ball. You need that only if you plan to replant a tree in the same spot or build there.

Will grinding damage my lawn?

We keep the work area tight. The grinder rolls over the stump, not your whole yard. We rake the chips level when we are done. The grass right around the stump may need reseeding, and we will tell you that up front.

What happens to the wood chips?

They are yours if you want them — great mulch for beds. We mix them with soil to fill the hole, or we can haul them away. Just tell us which you prefer.

Can you grind a stump next to a fence or walkway?

Yes. We use a smaller grinder for tight spots and put up screens to protect fences, siding, and windows from flying chips. We have done thousands of tight-access stumps.

Do I need to call 811 before you grind?

In Maryland, calling 811 gets your underground lines marked for free. We check for utilities on every job, and we call 811 when the stump sits near gas, electric, or water lines. It is free, and it keeps everyone safe.

Will grass grow where the stump was?

Yes. We grind the stump well below grade and fill the hole with the grindings mixed with soil. Top it with seed and topsoil, and grass takes hold in a few weeks. We can handle the fill and seeding as part of the job — just ask.
